After a heated tug-of-war with the Regional Department for the Economy, Employment, Labor, and Solidarity (DREETS in French), E. Guigal winery has been instructed to change its labels and all communication materials by September 1, 2024, by removing the “Château D’Ampuis Rhône France” designation. However, the interim relief judge of the Lyon administrative court recently postponed this decision by suspending it in August, thus preventing significant changes to the estate for the time being.
For nearly 30 years, E. Guigal winery has proudly featured this historic winegrowing monument’s name and iconic image without any issues. Nevertheless, DREETS’ unexpected identification of irregularities during their June and November 2023 checks has led to a decision that would inflict substantial costs on a winery that places immense value on its intellectual property.

Our WI&NE expert, Céline Baillet, from the consulting firm MIIP, highlights the importance of DREETS services in safeguarding consumers against deceptive practices. “However, the sudden enforcement of short deadlines for winegrowers may pose challenges. It is crucial to empathize with the industry players and recognize their difficulties. Providing adequate time for implementing necessary changes (if indeed “necessary”) is essential, especially considering the existing hardships within the wine sector. DREETS should consider the economic implications of their decisions, particularly during the harvesting season and amidst the industry’s ongoing challenges.”
